If you are looking for a simple natural face wash, coconut oil may be just the ticket. The first time I read about the oil cleansing method on Wellness Mama it seemed counterintuitive. I have naturally oily skin and for years sought out facial products that were oil-free.
But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Like dissolves like. If you want to dissolve the oil on your face, the best substance to use is oil. I recently switched to using Argan oil as a facial moisturizer, so why not also clean my face with oil?
This morning I decided to give it a try and wash my face with organic extra virgin coconut oil.
DIY Recipe for Coconut Oil Face Wash
This is one of the simplest recipes ever!
- Coconut oil
Steps for Oil Cleansing with Coconut Oil
- Melt coconut oil by rubbing it between your clean hands. If you are in a warmer climate, the coconut oil may already be in a liquid state.
- Rub coconut oil onto your dry face and neck.
- Soak a wash cloth in warm water. Hold the wash cloth against your face to stream your pores open.
- Use the wash cloth to wipe most of the coconut oil off your face.
Lately, I have been in a cold climate and using regular bar soap to wash my face. After a shower my face is usually red and extremely dry. After cleaning my face with coconut oil it felt more moisturized. I still needed to follow-up with moisturizer, but my skin was not screaming “I’m dry, please moisturize me immediately!”.
Throughout the day my face has stay moisturized, but not overly oily or shiny.
The best part of using coconut oil as a natural face wash is the wonderful aroma! I plan to keep using coconut oil on my face for a bit, and then try the oil cleansing method with jojoba oil.
