Eco Nuts Natural Laundry Soap Review

Product Review

For this product review, I tested out Eco Nuts Natural Laundry Soap. Eco Nuts are actually dried berries from the Sapindus mukorossi (soapberry) tree that grows in Nepal and India. In the washing machine, Eco Nuts release saponin, which is a natural cleaning substance.

I ordered a box of Eco Nuts that should last for 100 loads of laundry from Amazon for $9.99, with free super saver shipping.

A Natural Alternative to

Eco Nuts are a natural alternative to laundry detergents containing artificial fragrances, artificial colors, and other synthetic ingredients.

Traditional laundry detergents cause environmental pollution once they wash down the drain. Detergents containing phosphate can cause algae blooms in fresh water.1 Surfactants are used in laundry detergents to change the surface tension between water and oil and help remove the dirt from clothing. 2 Some types of surfactants are toxic to aquatic organisms and persist in the environment.3

  • Eco Nuts® (dried berry shells from the soapberry tree)
  • 2 Wash Bags

Enough Eco Nuts for 100 loads of laundry come in a small paper box containing 6.5 oz.

Eco Nuts are gentle on both clothes and skin, making them ideal for those with sensitive skin, eczema, allergies and psoriasis. Because they are so mild and leave little residue, they are perfect for baby clothes and cloth diapers. The quick biodegradability of Eco Nuts also makes them great for septic and grey water systems

Fragrance Free, Hypoallergenic, Biodegradable, Non-toxic, Kills Odors, he and standard compatible

  1. Place 4-5 Eco Nuts in the reusable wash bag provided and tie it closed.
  2. Put it in with your laundry and wash normally.
  3. Remove the bag at the end of the wash and set aside to dry or use for another load.
  4. Re-use up to 10 times or until the Eco Nuts start to disintegrate.

Eco Nuts have a berry smell to them, especially after they have been through the wash. The scent almost makes you want to take a nibble. They look like dried berry shells, but are about the size of hazel nuts. The box is much smaller than I expected, about 4″x4″x2″.

It was fun throwing the little pouch containing five berries into the washing machine. It was much less messy than dealing with liquid or powder laundry soap.

After a load of laundry it was like a game to find “where did the bag of Eco Nuts go?”. But even if you accidentally throw them in the drier, the instructions say that is fine.

After three loads of laundry, I am quite happy with how this natural and gentle laundry soap works. The clothes came out clean.

Once dry, the clothing did not smell at all. It did not have an overly “clean” fragrance, but it also did not smell dirty. I like this! I am always looking for fragrance-free options, since I am sensitive to many artificial fragrances. It might take some people a while to get used to not having a perfume scent on their clothes, but I love that these Eco Nuts do not add fragrance to my clothes!

Best of all, the clothes were nice and soft when I folded them!

Update 3/1/2013: We have been washing all of our laundry with Eco Nuts for the past year and we still love them! We just now needed to purchase a second box. With the 100 Load box lasting for an entire year, it is a super deal. The only time the Eco Nuts do not cut it on their own is if we have really soiled laundry, like cloth baby wipes. In that case I add a little bit of Dr. Bronner’s Soap to the load, along with the Eco Nuts.

Rating 5 Stars (5 / 5)

Eco Nuts Natural Laundry Soap earn their first star for containing all-natural ingredients. Even the little wash bags look like they are made from natural fiber.

They earn another star for coming in a recyclable paper box, instead of a big plastic bottle.

Eco Nuts detergent earns another star for being very effective at cleaning and softening clothing, without added fragrance.

Eco Nuts are also a good value for your money. You can wash 100 loads for $10, or 10 loads per $1. There is also a box that washes around 360 loads for about $25 on Amazon. For comparison, you may spend around $20 for Tide he that washes 110 loads.

Eco Nuts get a final star for being a pleasure to use. No more cleaning up runny laundry detergent! Just throw the little bag of berries in the wash, fish it out when the washer stops, and let it dry until next time.

Eco Nuts earn an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars and are highly recommended. Especially if you are looking for a fragrance-free or residue-free laundry detergent, give Eco Nuts a try!
