Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap Review

Product Review

For this product review, I have been using Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap 18-in-1 Hemp Citrus Orange Pure-Castile Soap, made with organic oils, for the past month.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure-Castile Soaps are completely biodegradable, vegetable-based and made with certified fair trade and organic oils.

I first purchased a 2 oz bottle, which is a great size for a travel toiletry, at Down to Earth for $1.99. The 2 oz bottle lasted two of us about two weeks, using it as body and face wash. We liked it so much that we purchased a 16 oz bottle on sale at Foodland for $6.99.

A Natural Alternative to

Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap can be used as a natural alternative to body washes containing artificial fragrance, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial preservatives, and artificial colors.

The many uses for Dr. Bronner’s natural 18-in-1 Castile soap include:

  • For everyday body-washing: Get wet and pour soap full-strength onto hands-washcloth-loofah. Lather up, scrub down, rinse off, and tingle fresh & clean.

  • For other uses, dilute from one part soap into 40 parts water for light cleaning, to cutting it in half or using it full strength for heavy-duty grease-cutting jobs.

  • For shampoo, though we now recommend our new Shikakai soaps for this, many people are fond of using it as such. The method of application is to wet hair and scalp very thoroughly, squirt some soap into hands and work into a lather. Wash hair, then rinse well. Afterwards use our new citrus hair rinse and leave-in conditioners as directed.

  • For the laundry, use 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup for one regular load; adjust as needed depending on hardness of water. I’ve been told that adding a dash of baking soda makes it even better.

  • For toothbrushing, apply a drop or two of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap to a wet toothbrush. Brush as you normally would, rinsing accordingly. Be careful about using more than a couple drops of soap, as you might start foaming at the mouth. Many people with sensitive or softer teeth like to use our soap as a toothpaste because it lacks abrasives.

Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Pure Castile Soap in Citrus Orange scent has a score of 1, low hazard, in EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. Most ingredients are in the 0-2, low hazard, range. The two ingredients with a score of 3, moderate hazard, are Lemon Peel Oil and Lime Oil, which have use restrictions.

Packaging

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap comes in a 100% recycled plastic bottle,  which is also refillable. Some stores, such as Down to Earth in Honolulu, have large containers of Dr. Bronner’s products, which you can use to refill your bottle. That way you only pay for the soap, without needlessly consuming another plastic bottle.

Promises

Nothing smells as fresh as the smell of organic citrus oils. The organic orange, lemon, and lime stimulate the skin and invigorate the body, resulting in a truly refreshing shower experience. All oils and essential oils are certified organic to the National Organic Standards Program. Packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Observations

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure-Castile Soap has a very thin and transparent consistency. You only need a few tiny drops, which are almost invisible in the palm of your hand, to work up a nice bubbly lather. For using as body wash, you can use the Castile soap full strength. The Citrus Orange option is a nice fresh scent, which I find not at all irritating. Another option that is great for those who are sensitive to even natural fragrances is the Baby Mild scent.

Both my husband and I absolutely loved the Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap at first. We were using it both as body wash and face wash. After a month of use we realized that the Castile soap was drying out our skin. We still enjoy using it as body wash, but recommend following up with a natural all-over moisturizer. I also recommend using something less drying on your face.

Effectiveness

Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap is an effective natural body wash, leaving skin feeling clean and fresh.

Rating 4.5 Stars (4.5 / 5)

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap in Citrus Orange earns its first star for containing all-natural ingredients.

The liquid Castile soap earns a second star for coming in a refillable bottle, made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Another star is awarded for effectiveness as a natural body wash.

Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap earns another star for being a good value for your money. A tiny bit goes a long way. A 16 oz bottle, which normally sells for around $10, would probably last an individual using it daily as body wash for about 8 months.

The Pure-Castile soap in Citrus Orange earns half a star for being a pleasure to use. I really enjoy using this pure natural soap, I just wish it would not leave my skin dry.

Overall, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure-Castile Soap earns 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I highly recommend giving it a try, for one of its many possible uses.
